superbad. See link in post below. Yes superbad is a good example of exploration – and a sense could be seen as a metaphor/ trope for your mind. The mind is how we construct a sense of who we are. Thus it has a much to do with with self perception and identity.

This the last tutorial week of this course. You will bring in your projects. I will talk individually to everyone about progress.

Next week you will have 1 hr to prepare for your presentation. Only a few minutes. Show your site. Discuss in terms of theme and development of the idea. Give me final product on a CD and I will transfer to my drive.

Firstly create a new site (site>new) - set up root folder with 2 sub folders (named pages & assets). Then create a page. Place an image or text in the centre. Use this as your entry page. Do these basic exercises to get the idea of javascript.
Remember to copy and paste code in the correct places
exercise 1: create a new window. Go to:

OPEN multiple windows. Make 3 extra pages and save same folder as your ‘parent’ page. Name them appropriately e.g. pop1.html, pop1.html etc.
Javascript that will pop up an additional rather than replacement window.

Using the open() method , you can assign the windows to different locations and a new window will be generated, leaving the old intact. Use the same rules as above for the open method. (ex 1)

Q1: I don't have much knowledge about art - know a few artists such as Andy Warhol; appreciate art when I can see the amount of effort and skill required; I like to decorate things around my house, my folder, my car; I have been interested in art for a long time -been drawing and painting since i was a child; From the ones i now i enjoy creating print art, video edting, painting, photography, 3d modeling, typography, my goal is to become a motion graphic designer using these skills; I did art and design in school and I enjoy doing art word such as painting in my spare time. Andy Warhol is my favorite artist; i like art very much and have done so since i was a child and have loved to draw and sketch from a young age. Probably the first artist who influenced me at a very young age was the Botanist/Naturalist/(water colour) painter Neville William Cayley. and Goya; I am interested in the photography side of art; I'm interested in the design of posters, logos etc - studied Chinese artist Liu Bolin; Fairly interested but mainly the less-abstract and animators; I consider myself very interested in art, being an art history student i have a strong connection with the aesthetic and design.- know few gallery owners who sell their own work - I paint; I am keen in making art.

Q3: the strange rabbit-faced person catches my focus; find it somewhat disturbing rather than humorous or charming; the rabbit head looks really weird; the rabbit is dressed in an older lady fashion clothing, though, the surrounding objects are almost childish; fear of nature, metal disorder towards people using an innocent animal to represent fear; shot from the movie "Alice in Wonderland"; into the looking the glass' and the second would be Clockwork Orange (the novel) - also loss of innocence; the wierd concept of a rabbits head on a lady's body.; quirky, weird, thinking outside the box, contemporary. i feel a japanese feel to this photo; rabbit from Alice in Wonderland; a bit confusing; pretentious teenage girls blog photos; a bit unusual; there's some story behind it; it looks 'constructive' (constructed ?); minds me of things from childhood.(creepy); rabbit in wonderland.

The online community frequently asks to what is “identity,” what is “digital identity,” and whether we can have several identities or only one, etc. I feel that we need to look at the differences, as is usually perceived between personality vs identity - they are often mistakenly are conflated (combined).

Identity: set of attributes that allow to recognize a person or set of persons as unique or distinct. Key variables: distinction, uniqueness.
Personality: this refers to a type or characteristic of behavior and the psychological classification of different types of individuals.

define identity: (wikipedia does it well) or internet persona is a social identity that an Internet user establishes in online communities and websites. Although some people prefer to use their real names online, most Internet users prefer to be anonymous, identifying thru pseudonyms, which reveal a little of their identies.

In some online contexts, including Internet forums, messaging, and multiplayer online games, users can represent themselves visually by choosing an avatar... As other users interact with an online identity, a reputation develops.

SEE the USYD composite face. Can you see yourself in this? Will we go the same way as say Istanbul where the east meets the west in a face/identity that has morphed into a composite of "Asia" and "western" face? Is Australia the ultimate potential composite?

We may do an exercise where I get all of us to take a foto/portrait of another person in the class and we attempt a composite for a male and female.. upload it.

For this week depending on time - or next week if not (Each student is to present a site /(v)blog or some other online experiment that engages them – as an example of an art form or design - how it contributes to the development of the internet and identifying possibilities for contemporary art/design practice. This will followed up by a short report due in the final week – posted on blog

The Mainstream Formats
psd is photoshop's native format. good for keeping a working document - including layers, extra channels, file info...etc. BEST to flatten even though psd files can be imported into some applications.
tiffis the most widely supported image-printing format - up to 24 channels. Best for good photo imaging - too big for web.
jpegis the most efficient and essential compression format currently available BUT is a LOSSY compression lose a little image quality for size. Don't work on images in jpeg. Save again and again loses pixels.
gif only 256 colors. Good for getting transparency (want area of the image that are transparent ). Also for simple animation
pdf to view electronically produced documents on screen. Careful file size.
png(pronounced ping) - save 16 millions color images - only used a bit.

One artist or group that they feel in some way they are engaged by. I am including this in the 35% online diary assessment. We will also look at your concepts/mockups as I requested last week.

Artist in photo:: choijeonghwa. See Jayme's blog. Tx Jayme. Choi Jeong Hwa's work is I think is motivated by the plastic wonderland within Korean sub-culture of pop markets and consumer artifice- taking on wide range of media from huge video screens, plastic animals, real and fake food, lights and always wiring everywhwere. It seems to reach out from those Seoul chaotic, local open-air markets- kitsch, theatre, the mass produced item, the glitz of the twenty-first century $2 dollar/¥100 shops.

He uses air, rotting food and cheap plastic in a totally provocative, commenting upon a culture of superficial fabrication in S Korea. He also challenges the attempts made by museums to preserve art in a world that is constantly changing and decaying.

the blog : 2 posts per week. This is the opportunity to compile, construct, render etc a record - the idea is to engage in the practice of concept development of a project related to your ideas regarding web design; the role of art in web / design. What is design? How is it linked to art and design? You will also keep a record of sites visited during the semester. You could do this through blogspot or wordpress.
Details: your online journal will include:
• A wide range of images and explanation of why selected
• Record of online research including web based design AND art practice
• Research report that follows up your short presentation (600 words plus) – see below
• Research on artist / designers online. Their role online and conceptual background
• Your lab work – how it connects with your core studies
• Response to weekly readings
The blog should reflect your ongoing reflection on your creative work. Specifically:
A range of images: from mass media, books, online imagery, sketches, mockups, photos in any form that can screened, scanned etc. into the blog with notes if needed
Written work: showing you are thinking about art/dsign not simply cutting and pasting. Some kind of quick reference would be appropriate
Development/process: not necessarily step by step but at least some direction
Critical awareness: of contemporary trends in online art and its effect on design. (interconnectedness). Theorists such as Manovich are useful.
Research report: based on your website research presentation given wk 3/4. Report 600 words as part of blog/diary. You will need to consider: a. whether it falls into design &/or art; b. why; c. how relates to other art/design forms on the web.
Major project concept (due week 6) 10 marks
Your concept for your site will incorporate:
1. psp mockup a rational
2. a short written investigation of design possibilities from other sites leading up to a final site project that will be uploaded on the university server.

Major Web Project: (due week 13) 50 marks
The major web project will be to construct your own site. The site must be uploaded onto the web either via the university or a free provider.
THEMES: This semester 2 themes will be offered. You will chose one:
1.“Movement” – movement in terms of spatially or perhaps temporally.
The theme must communicate something around the notion of MOVEMENT. Interpret that as you will. e.g. perhaps referring to movement as art often does– through suggesting motion within the work; or perhaps spacially – as the relative position/movement of objects or events you decide.
2. “IDENTITY” – identity online or in terms of your personal identity; or perhaps construction of identity. The theme must communicate something around the notion of IDENTITY. Interpretation again quite open. e.g. personal identity or persona, online or with differing people – you decide.
Note for both: You may decide to use text or none. It would be best to communicate clearly without relying only on overly obvious interpretations such as “those times when I got my first bike” etc. In other words it must use visual material/text/text as image to communicate this effectively.
Please remember that the focus is on the theme NOT just the application of a design software technology to a website development.

A quick mind map on identity.

I want u to make a concept in Photoshop based on an aspect of u theme. Take any images u can scrounge up from anywhere. Start a new page. See specs in the other image in this post. Place images. Try to make a collage of ideas. Use text if u like. Keep it minimal and graphic in nature. Let the images do the communicating. Does it work BOTH as a form of communication and aesthetically?

3. give the file to the other person next to u. Best probably to swap seats I think. Ask them what they think you are trying to communicate. Only then explain it to them..
4. this person tries to improve on the work.
5. we will post the results up on u blog.

Looking at the 'spaces' for contemporary artists for the Web.
Look at the humorous work of the site artistsmeeting.org with its use of the vending of art via a machine. The project, AM–AM (Artists Meeting – Art Machine), will serve as a contemporary version of the art gallery and art dealer with state-of-the-art coin-operated vending machines built along a 4x3m wall. layout css or tables

Ideally when you have learnt quite bit of css for layout i.e. you feel quite confident you would only use a layout in Photoshop as a mockup to work from. Then:
1. Export image (without slicing it) as a jpg or gif file.
2. Create a div, insert your text.
3. Style (CSS) both text and div as needed - remember to assign image as
div background
But of course, not all of us have the time or the background to do this (css apart from text is a bit of a learning curve), so we can use Photoshop to layout and then slice up work - then import into DMW. OK but if I was doing it in tables, I would do it from within DMW from scratch.
OH and by the way PhotoshopCS4 does divs (css layouts) from slices:
When you have made slices in Photoshop, you can save as Divs instead of tables GO File->Save for Web go through settings there, then go to save it, and save as images and html, blah blah... and then you will see a title "settings" with a dropbox next to it; if you select other, you will get a window go through those settings (like xhtml, prefixes, etc) but in the dropdown box that says "HTML" select "Slices" and then you will see "Slice Output" and it will be set as Generate Table, Select Generate CSS and reference it by id, and it will generate CSS and div tags... From there you can work on it. Great!

Every now and then, inevitably, the ineviatble debate sparks again in the online community as to what is “identity,” what is “digital identity,” and whether we can have several identities or only one, etc. I feel that we need to look at the differences, as is usually perceived between personality vs identity - they are often mistakenly are conflated.

Identity: set of attributes that allow to recognize a person or set of persons as unique or distinct. Key variables: distinction, uniqueness.
Personality: this refers to a type or characteristic of behavior and the psychological classification of different types of individuals.

Thus online identity: (wikipedia does it well)or internet persona is a social identity that an Internet user establishes in online communities and websites. Although some people prefer to use their real names online, most Internet users prefer to be anonymous, identifying thru pseudonyms, which reveal a little of their identies.

In some online contexts, including Internet forums, messaging, and multiplayer online games, users can represent themselves visually by choosing an avatar... As other users interact with an online identity, a reputation develops.

The concept of the personal self, and how this is influenced by emerging technologies, are a subject of research in fields such as psychology and sociology. The Online disinhibition effect is a notable example, referring to a concept of uninhibited behavior on the internet, arising as a result of anonymity and audience gratification.

2. a short written investigation of design possibilities from other sites leading up to a final site project that will be uploaded on the university server. (this asks you to investigate sites that may influenced your concept in terms of design, layout, architecture and/or ideas. I am particularly interested in the look and feel of a site as well as its conceptual background. Any site that may help to realistically help your site development).
Feedback will by you peers and myself in class. You will work in groups of 3 students. You will offer an assessment out of 10 at end of review. I will combine these with my marks (averaged). Then you will have time to work on your the concept for 1/2 hr...

AND on the project:: My advice would be not to treat this like a mathematical problem. There is no one right way to go about this--there's not even one right definition of identity. A lot of the things we think of as personality are definitely related to identity.

For me, I think identity has something to do with my relationship to others around me. That identity can shift when I'm in the role of a son or daughter, or of a person in relationship, or of a stranger passing you on the street.

But there's something at the core of all those versions of me that is always me--and that's what I would meditate on before I went about creating this project.

A. Design & layout techniques for html. The limits of html. Html as a code is important as it is the architecture that structures the Internet but what limitations does it have? IN reality when we talk about limitations we mean what can it do in terms of structure - and that has been up until recently a case of what TABLES will do.. (see this site)

This basic tutorial at table design webmonkey is a good guide. For instance if you can draw something in a grid, and it's not shaped like an L, you can put it in a table. And if you understand what you can and can't do right from the beginning, you'll save yourself lots of hassle in the long run.

Or if you are OK with boxes and css layout but want to refresh yourself then go to these DMW4 tutorials . We will do a quick review of tables and their possibilities/limitations today. We will take images from this blog and combine them into a page. We will look briefly at using style sheets again.

B. a presentation of a site I consider to be an effective example of web based art. mouchette. This site is incedibly confronting - seemingly innocent introduction by a child artist hides the shocking truth within the site - a complex site with various secret links, electronic interactive texts, and poems that reveal the multiple faces of the artist, along with her fears and obsessions. Loosely-based on the 1937 book by Georges Bernanos and the 1967 Robert Bresson movie, Mouchette, the website expands upon the the film. (The movie portrays a girl suffering from the pains of abuse, an alcoholic father and dying mother. Eventually she finds that her only escape from the hatred and sexual abuse in her life is suicide.) The net artist draw several character similarities to the female protagonist of the film Mouchette, but also relates similar thematic ideas. - subpages of the site use visually-shocking pictures and interactive forums of taboo subjects to explore themes of sexual abuse, violence and hatred, and loneliness. The anonymous authorship of the site, as well as the user interface, poses an underlying question of identity, >> true nature of the website? Mouchette.org challenges the viewer to confront these disturbing themes and make a decision of further conduct. Not for everyone!

C. Each student is to present a site / (v)blog or some other online experiment that engages them – as an example of an art form or design - how it contributes to the development of the internet and identifying possibilities for contemporary art/design practice. This will followed up by a critique of 700-800 words due next week – posted on blog. You will need to consider:
a. whether it falls into design and/or art (and why);
b. how it relates to other art/design forms on the web.;
c. how it may reflect in content or style your final project.

mp3, aac, wma. What's the difference between audio files?

Audio files allow you to store music digitally. There's a number of file types around so the tricky part is figuring out what's different about all of them.
MP3 is the most popular audio file format for listening to music on your computer. They let you to listen to your favourite song in high quality and because they are so common and compress the music without sacrificing too much quality, you can easily send files onto your family and friends.
AAC files are relatively new on the scene and they generally provide audio at a higher quality than MP3. If you have an iPod or use iTunes, you may have noticed that your songs are saved as AAC files and this is because AAC files are Apple's preferred file format.
If you're a Windows user, you may have heard of WMA files as they were developed by Microsoft for use in Windows Media Player. The sound quality isn't as good as MP3 or AAC files but it's still a popular way to listen to music from your computer.
So what's the best audio file to use? You can assess the above three types by having a think about the quality you require, your desired file size or what programs you use to listen to your music.

The blog should reflect your ongoing reflection on your creative work. Specifically:
A range of images: from mass media, books, online imagery, sketches, mockups, photos in any form that can screened, scanned etc. into the blog with notes if needed

Research report: based on your website research presentation given wk 3/4. Report 600 words as part of blog/diary. You will need to consider: a. whether it falls into design and/or art; b. why it does so; c. how it relates to other art/design forms on the web.

Participation: usually 90% plus, without certification for illness or misadventure.
Major project concept (due week 7) 10 marks
Your concept for your site will incorporate:

Major Web Project: (due week 13) 50 marks
The major web project will be to construct your own site. The site must be uploaded onto the web either via the university or a free provider.
Change:::THEME: “IDENTITY” – identity online or in terms of your personal identity; or perhaps construction of identity.
The theme must communicate something around the notion of IDENTITY. Interpret that as you will. e.g. personal identity or persona, online or with differing people – you decide. You may decide to use text or none. It would be best to communicate clearly without relying only on overly obvious interpretations such as “my personality” etc. In other words it must use visual material / text / text as image to communicate this effectively.

1 class exercise (weeks 8) 15 marks
These form an integral part of the assessment. Related to the ongoing work. Only in class. Will NOT be re-done if student is not present on that day. (these are to be primarily technical exercises)

Javascript that will pop up an additional rather than replacement window.

Using the open() method , you can assign the windows to different locations and a new window will be generated, leaving the old intact. Use the same rules as above for the open method. (ex 1)

Why Shred the Web? see shredder

The web is not a publication. Web sites are not paper. Yet the current thinking of web design is that of the magazine, newspaper, book, or catalog. Visually, aesthetically, legally, the web is treated as a physical page upon which text and images are written.

Web pages are temporary graphic images created when browsing software reads HTML. This gives the illusion of solidity or permanence in the web. But behind the graphical illusion is a vast body of text files -- containing HTML code -- that fills hard drives on computers at locations all over the world. Collectively these instructions make up what we call 'the web'. But what if these instructions are read differently?

The web browser is our means of perception through which we 'see' the web. The Shredder presents this global structure as a chaotic, raucous collage. By altering the HTML code before the browser reads it, the Shredder appropriates the data of the web, transforming it into a parallel web. Content becomes abstraction. Text becomes graphics. Information becomes art.

In pairs: find 2 narrative sites, 2 non- narrative, 2 multi-dimensional sites an finally group them into whether they have a design or art focus. Can u define art vs design from this analysis.

With 4-5 students: do image on phone and collage in photoshop exercise.

We may do an exercise where I get all of us to take a foto/portrait of another person in the class and we attempt a composite for a male and female.. upload it.

For next week (Each student is to present a site /(v)blog or some other online experiment that engages them – as an example of an art form or design - how it contributes to the development of the internet and identifying possibilities for contemporary art/design practice. This will followed up by a short report due in the final week – posted on blog

the blog : This is the opportunity to compile, construct, render etc a record - the idea is to engage in the practice of concept development of a project related to your ideas regarding web design; the role of art in web / design. What is design? How is it linked to art and design? You will also keep a record of sites visited during the semester. You could do this through blogspot or wordpress.
• Details: your online journal will include:
• A wide range of images and explanation of why selected
• Record of online research including web based design AND art practice
• Research report that follows up your short presentation (600 words plus) – see below
• Research on artist / designers online. Their role online and conceptual background
• Your lab work – how it connects with your core studies
• Response to weekly readings
The blog should reflect your ongoing reflection on your creative work. Specifically:
A range of images: from mass media, books, online imagery, sketches, mockups, photos in any form that can screened, scanned etc. into the blog with notes if needed
Written work: showing you are thinking about art/dsign not simply cutting and pasting. Some kind of quick reference would be appropriate
Development/process: not necessarily step by step but at least some direction
Critical awareness: of contemporary trends in online art and its effect on design. (interconnectedness). Theorists such as Manovich are useful.

From a book that one of the students has been reading .. an excerpt.. it may be useful for those who are a bit lost:
"....the famous example of Michelangelo's theory of sculpture: the statue is already in the stone, has been in the stone since the beginning of time, and the sculptor's job is to see it and release it by carefully scraping away the excess material."
In other words its a case of getting inside of whatever is there... I know a lot of artist would say its a case of exploring in the language they use (sound, film, digital etc). The point is you need to start somewhere - to stop trying to over plan or to write. Get in there like a child who will incorporate anything into their play—whatever small piece of stuff is lying on he ground, whatever piece of information they have picked up and play with it- keep the idea open and working till you get it to a point where its found or what mathematicians say has ‘elegance,’ that is, such economy of statement that a single line of thought has a great many implications and outcomes. . .
Its a case of taking something common and finding what is unique in it... Keep refining it with the eye of a good aircraft mechanic.
I feel that some of the class have not quite got this or perhaps are not used to the freedom and the difficulties that freedom presents..
