s2 week 13
Please be ready to set up your site on the desktop of the mac at the left front the lab. I will expect you to explain:
1. how your project is an effective interpretation of the theme "identity"
2. the visual decisions you made - why you chose this look
3. any influences from net art or design online
I will at times ask another person to attempt to use you site. - user evaluation.
Please also provide the final site PLUS working parts on a disk - marked with your name/no.
Note: There was no one right way to go about this--there's not even one right definition of identity. A lot of the things we think of as personality are definitely related to identity. For me, identity has something to do with my relationship to others around me.
But there's something at the core of all those versions of me that is always me--and that's what I would meditate on before I went about creating this project.
Thanks for working with me this semester. It was fun.
Please don't forget the Prize!
cheers

Narrative and making work...
This week will briefly follow up on the class exercise i set in the last class from wk 8. We will discuss issues on narrative and structure in web projects.

luminalive.sg
pencilrebel.com
crumpler.com.au

Taking the idea of interactive narrative as a starting point we will examine a diverse range of projects that use narrative as a vital component. We will consider how narrative is employed as a structural and/or conceptual imperative in these projects:

Wk 10 Oct 7
Final studio workshop and tutorial sessions. I will look at the 'spaces' for contemporary artists for the Web. I will consider in particular the work of G.H. Hovagimyan at nujus.net.
Also I will look at the humorous work of the site artistsmeeting.org with its use of the vending of art via a machine. The project, AM–AM (Artists Meeting – Art Machine), will serve as a contemporary version of the art gallery and art dealer with state-of-the-art coin-operated vending machines built along a 12’x8’ wall. ( video)
Then a quick look at plazaville (after the film by Jean Luc Godard)
Also d-i-n-a
The underlying basis of computer networked art is the relationship of the links and how the networks form or rather what forms any series of links takes. The problem is that there is a breakdown of the idea of truth because there are multiple overlapping networks that all have a point of view base on the aggregate.
I am thinking of getting a group drawing together. See if we have time...
Studio development of major project.

week 9
Identifying current web animation technologies – Flash & Quicktime etc. Using sounds on your website, some common file formats. Examination of recent contemporary art projects that - sound & video. Feedback & help on final project. Having introduced animation on a basic level via Photoshop, we can look at the beginnings of Flash and maybe MAYA
» Drawing in Flash » Frame by Frame Animation » Motion Tween » Shape Tween
» Instances and importing stage/library
» Review Flash Animation setup as a project
» insert image and swf and sound
I will get those who could not attend last week to do the assessment. I would like others to talk through and to attempt with a partner to introduce a Flash or Quicktime element into their final concept..

week 7 animate and slicing in CS4

We will look at basic animation in Photoshop (see gif site). Then some work on slicing up images.
I will discuss the reasons for doing this and the limitations and advantages.
See the sample in the link to the blog below.

Structure and layout. A note for you to perhaps consider alternative structures (layouts) for your site.
Consider this BLOG. Split vertically down the centre as a design element. See also the with various forms of linking. A variety of points of entry...

Finally apaologies foir not completing marking. Bike accident caused neck issue. No use of computer.

layout css or tables
Ideally when you have learnt quite bit of css for layout i.e. you feel quite confident you would only use a layout in Photoshop as a mockup to work from. Then:
1. Export image (without slicing it) as a jpg or gif file.
2. Create a div, insert your text.
3. Style (CSS) both text and div as needed - remember to assign image as
div background
But of course, not all of us have the time or the background to do this (css apart from text is a bit of a learning curve), so we can use Photoshop to layout and then slice up work - then import into DMW. OK but if I was doing it in tables, I would do it from within DMW from scratch.
OH and by the way PhotoshopCS4 does divs (css layouts) from slices:
When you have made slices in Photoshop, you can save as Divs instead of tables GO File->Save for Web go through settings there, then go to save it, and save as images and html, blah blah... and then you will see a title "settings" with a dropbox next to it; if you select other, you will get a window go through those settings (like xhtml, prefixes, etc) but in the dropdown box that says "HTML" select "Slices" and then you will see "Slice Output" and it will be set as Generate Table, Select Generate CSS and reference it by id, and it will generate CSS and div tags... From there you can work on it. Great!

structure
asymmetry: eco zoo
organic structure: Craigslist- a rudimentary example of a website that exhibits this design model in a naturally elegant way. - not be visually stunning- it reflects the ways in which we view and share information as a community- has its own organic way - true to a kind of human expression that mimics a real-world community bulletin board.
All taken from a list apart/imperfection in design

personality vs identity
Every now and then, inevitably, the ineviatble debate sparks again in the online community as to what is “identity,” what is “digital identity,” and whether we can have several identities or only one, etc. I feel that we need to look at the differences, as is usually perceived between personality vs identity - they are often mistakenly are conflated.
Identity: set of attributes that allow to recognize a person or set of persons as unique or distinct. Key variables: distinction, uniqueness.
Personality: this refers to a type or characteristic of behavior and the psychological classification of different types of individuals.
Thus online identity: (wikipedia does it well)or internet persona is a social identity that an Internet user establishes in online communities and websites. Although some people prefer to use their real names online, most Internet users prefer to be anonymous, identifying thru pseudonyms, which reveal a little of their identies.
In some online contexts, including Internet forums, messaging, and multiplayer online games, users can represent themselves visually by choosing an avatar... As other users interact with an online identity, a reputation develops.
The concept of the personal self, and how this is influenced by emerging technologies, are a subject of research in fields such as psychology and sociology. The Online disinhibition effect is a notable example, referring to a concept of uninhibited behavior on the internet, arising as a result of anonymity and audience gratification.
