The Mainstream Formats
psd is photoshop's native format. good for keeping a working document - including layers, extra channels, file info...etc. BEST to flatten even though psd files can be imported into some applications.
tiffis the most widely supported image-printing format - up to 24 channels. Best for good photo imaging - too big for web.
jpegis the most efficient and essential compression format currently available BUT is a LOSSY compression lose a little image quality for size. Don't work on images in jpeg. Save again and again loses pixels.
gif only 256 colors. Good for getting transparency (want area of the image that are transparent ). Also for simple animation
pdf to view electronically produced documents on screen. Careful file size.
png(pronounced ping) - save 16 millions color images - only used a bit.
• Buttons and code for Flash and javascripting.
